Early Life and Education
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1944, the future U.S. Senator would go on to earn a degree from the University of Georgia in 1966.
State Government
Entering politics at the local level, the politician served as a member of the Georgia General Assembly from 1976 to 1990. During this time, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Georgia governorship in 1990.
Georgia Senate and Board of Education
In the early 1990s, the politician's political trajectory shifted to state government. He held a seat in the Georgia State Senate from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, he unsuccessfully sought election to the U.S. Senate.
