Joko Widodo: Indonesia's 7th President

Early Life and Education

Joko Widodo, the 7th President of Indonesia, was born as Joko Widodo on June 21, 1961, in the Central Javanese city of Surakarta. His father, Widjiatno Notomihardjo, was a carpenter, and his mother, Sujiatmi, was a housewife. Due to his family's poverty, Widodo began working as a street vendor and a porter as a child. He learned the carpentry trade from his father and later sold souvenirs and furniture. In 1985, Widodo graduated with a degree in forestry engineering from the prestigious Gadjah Mada University.

Mayor of Surakarta (2005-2012)

Widodo's political career began in 2005 when he was elected Mayor of Surakarta. During his tenure, he implemented several socioeconomic and administrative reforms. He focused on enhancing Surakarta's cultural appeal, including the rebranding of the city as "Solo: Spirit of Java." Widodo also played a significant role in beautifying the city's parks, such as the acquisition of Balekambang Park and the removal of a flea market from Banjarsari Park.

Under Widodo's leadership, Surakarta's reputation improved both nationally and regionally. In 2006, the city joined the Organization of World Heritage Cities, and in 2008, it hosted the organization's summit. Widodo also initiated various cultural events, including the World Music Festival, which was held in the historic Vastenburg Fort.

Governor of Jakarta (2012-2014)

In 2012, Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama were chosen as the Governor and Vice Governor candidates, respectively, by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle. In the second round of the gubernatorial elections, Widodo decisively defeated the incumbent Governor, Fauzi Bowo.

President of Indonesia (2014-Present)

Widodo won the presidential elections held on July 9, 2014. He was inaugurated in October. As President, Widodo has focused on infrastructure development, economic growth, and social reforms. He has also played a key role in international diplomacy, particularly during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Widodo met with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for peace and the restoration of global food supply chains.

Family and Interests

Widodo is married to Iriana. They have three children: Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Kahiyang Ayu, and Kaesang Pangarep. Widodo is known for his love of rock music, particularly Metallica and Napalm Death. He listens to it at high volume and once owned a guitar autographed by Metallica members.
