Early Life and CareerJonas Gonçalves Oliveira, known simply as Jonas, was born in Bebedouro, São Paulo, Brazil, on March 1, 1984. Before pursuing football, he studied pharmacology at the university. However, his love for the beautiful game prevailed, and he joined Guarani FC as a youth player. In 2005, he made his professional debut at the age of 20.
Santos FC
Jonas' impressive performance at Guarani, where he became the club's top scorer in Serie B, caught the attention of Santos FC. In January 2006, he joined the legendary Brazilian club as a backup striker. Despite a promising start, a knee injury sidelined him for six months. After his return to fitness, Jonas struggled to find his rhythm, scoring only one goal in 15 league appearances.
Grêmio FC
In September 2007, Jonas signed for Grêmio FC. He quickly established himself as a starter, scoring in his debut against Internacional in the Grêmio-Nal. In 2009, he became Grêmio's top scorer with 24 goals in all competitions, including a remarkable hat-trick against São José. Jonas ranks fifth on Grêmio's all-time scoring list with 75 goals, surpassing legends like Ronaldinho, Eder, and Mario Jardel.
Loan to Portuguesa
In 2008, Jonas was loaned to Portuguesa FC to regain form. He scored nine goals in six months, becoming the team's top scorer.
Valencia CF
In 2011, Jonas made a significant move to Valencia CF in Spain. He made an unforgettable start by scoring a goal in the 10.5th second of his Champions League debut, ranking him as the second-fastest goalscorer in the competition's history behind Roy Makaay.
SL Benfica
In 2014, Jonas joined SL Benfica in Portugal. He became a prolific goalscorer for the Eagles, winning two Primeira Liga titles and three Taça de Portugal trophies. In 2015-16, he scored a remarkable 32 goals in 34 league appearances, claiming the golden boot for the season.
International Career
Jonas made his debut for the Brazil national team in 2007 and scored four goals in five appearances. He was included in Brazil's squad for the 2009 Confederations Cup but did not play.
Retirement
Jonas retired from professional football in 2019 after a remarkable career spanning 14 seasons. He is widely regarded as one of Brazil's most prolific strikers of his generation.
