Early Life and Education
Gregg Berhalter was born in New Jersey and developed a passion for soccer at a young age. He attended the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, where he played for the Broncos soccer team. Later, he transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he continued his collegiate soccer career.
Professional Club Career
Chivas USAIn 2006, Berhalter was selected by Chivas USA in the fourth round of the MLS SuperDraft. His arrival marked a significant turning point in his career, as Chivas manager Bob Bradley transitioned him from an attacking player to a defender. In his debut season, Berhalter emerged as MLS Rookie of the Year despite his low draft position. The following year, he earned recognition by being named to the MLS Best XI.
Tigres UANL
In 2011, Berhalter made a move to the Mexican club Tigres UANL. He remained a key player for the team, helping them win several domestic titles.
International Career
Berhalter made his debut for the United States men's national soccer team in 2007 and became a regular starter. He was selected to represent the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Berhalter pursued a coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for the Columbus Crew before being appointed as the head coach of the United States men's national team in 2018. Under his leadership, the team won the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
