José Alencar was a prominent Brazilian entrepreneur and textile magnate who served as the Vice President of Brazil from 2003 to 2011.
Early Life and Business Career
Born in Minas Gerais, Alencar amassed a significant fortune in the textile industry. In 1994, he embarked on a political career, running for the governorship of Minas Gerais.
Political Partnership with Lula
In 2002, Alencar's political trajectory took a pivotal turn when he joined forces with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula), a leftist candidate from a labor union background. Together, they won the presidential election, with Alencar assuming the role of Vice President.
Minister of Defense and Chairman of Liberal Party
In 2004, at Lula's behest, Alencar took on the additional position of Minister of Defense, a post he held until 2006. He also served as the honorary chairman of the Liberal Party before joining the Brazilian Republican Party.
Re-election and Government Dissent
In 2006, Silva and Alencar were re-elected, with Alencar continuing as Vice President and acting head of state in the President's absence. Despite supporting social welfare programs, Alencar often voiced opposition to his government's policies, advocating for tax cuts.
Illness and Passing
Alencar's illness, which had been diagnosed as stomach and kidney cancer in 1997, cast a shadow over his later political life. He left office at the end of the presidential term, having left an indelible mark on the Brazilian political landscape. On March 29, 2011, Alencar succumbed to stomach cancer.
