Early Life and Activism
Yitzhak Izhaki was a prominent Israeli leftist politician and Member of Knesset (MK). He played a significant role in the socialist movement in Palestine and Israel.
Born in 1899, Izhaki joined the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. In 1921, he immigrated to Mandatory Palestine and immediately became active in the socialist Zionist labor organization, Gdud HaAvoda ve-HaHagana. He worked on land reclamation, road construction, and building projects.
Political Leadership
Izhaki rose through the ranks of the socialist labor party, Poalei Zion. In 1925, he was sent to Europe as an emissary for the party. He also pursued a legal education in Paris. In 1934, he co-founded the Marxist Circle movement and the League for Arab-Jewish Cooperation.
Izhaki played a key role in the merger of Poalei Zion and Gdud HaAvoda, forming the left-wing Mapam party. He became a member of its leadership and participated in many political initiatives.
Parliamentary Career
In 1955, Izhaki was elected to the Knesset on the Mapam list. As an MK, he advocated for social justice, workers' rights, and a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Legacy
Yitzhak Izhaki was a dedicated socialist and Zionist. His contributions to the labor movement and the Israeli political landscape left a lasting impact. He remained an active figure in leftist politics until his passing.
