Early Life and Career
Jose Berardo was born in 1944 on the island of Madeira, Portugal, into a family of extremely modest means. He was the seventh child. When Jose turned thirteen, he left school and started working at the low-paying Madeira Wine factory, famous for producing wines. At the age of eighteen, the future billionaire went to South Africa, where he worked in horticulture. After some time, Jose established a small enterprise called Egoli Consolidated Mines Ltd, which by the end of the twentieth century became one of the most profitable and popular.
Jose Berardo himself became a well-known entrepreneur involved in mining various minerals, including diamonds. In 1986, he returned to Portugal and continued his own business activities.

Currently, Jose Berardo owns a multitude of companies involved in various sectors, including hospitality, tobacco production, food manufacturing, livestock, winemaking, banking, telecommunications, and many others. He is the owner of the famous Portuguese wine production company, Quinta de Bacalhoa. Additionally, the billionaire holds a significant stake in Sogrape, one of the largest wine distributors in the country.
Art holds a special place in Jose Berardo's life. He has been a long-time collector of various renowned artworks. In accordance with a government decision, a special fund was created to support Berardo's collections - Fundacao de Arte Moderna e Contemporanea - Coleccao Berardo, with a value exceeding 360 million euros. The total financial turnover of Jose Berardo's enterprises amounts to approximately 1.9 billion euros, including banking and telecommunications companies, as well as a stake in Sogrape.
