José Eduardo Agualusa: A Contemporary Angolan Writer
José Eduardo Agualusa, a renowned contemporary Angolan writer, was born in the city of Huambo in Angola. Having spent a significant period of his life in Lisbon and later Rio de Janeiro, Agualusa has authored eight novels, several short story collections, and a book of poetry, predominantly written in Portuguese.
Origins and Writing Style
A descendant of Angolan creoles—people of mixed Portuguese and African heritage—Agualusa's connection to the Portuguese language is both deeply personal and nuanced. He believes that Portuguese has evolved from being a language of colonial oppressors to "an African language that has absorbed Angolan concepts, expressions, rhythms, and emotions."
Literary Journey
Agualusa's literary career commenced in 1989 with the publication of his debut novel, "A Conspiração" ("The Conspiracy"). Set against the backdrop of Luanda from 1880 to 1911, the novel explores the intermingling of European and African cultures. His subsequent novel, "O Mercado de Dambos" ("The Market of Dambos") in 1992, delves into the roots of Angolan nationalism.
In "Tempo das Chuvas" ("Rainy Season") published in 1996, Agualusa blends autobiography with fiction, capturing the complexities of contemporary Angolan society post-independence and civil war. His works often intertwine historical events with imaginative elements, drawing from both the real and the surreal.
"The Seller of Pasts": A Personal Venture
In 2006, Agualusa founded the publishing house Lingua Geral, dedicated to showcasing works by Portuguese-language authors. Through Lingua Geral, he has supported and promoted the voices of fellow writers, enriching the literary landscape of the Portuguese-speaking world.
