Josef Dostál: An Olympic Legend

Early Life and Start of Career

Josef Dostál, a renowned Czech kayaker, was born in Prague on March 3, 1993. Inspired by his father, Tomáš Bosambo, a renowned rower and sculptor, Dostál began kayaking at a young age. He trained with the prestigious Dukla Prague sports club, honing his skills and establishing himself as a rising star.

International Breakthrough

In 2012, Dostál made his international debut with the Czech national team. He claimed a silver medal in the 500-meter single kayak event at the European Championships in Zagreb. Later that year, he won a bronze medal in the 1,000-meter four-person kayak event at the London Olympics.

Olympic Medalist

Dostál's impressive performances continued in the years following the London Olympics. He earned a victory in the 1,000-meter four-person kayak event at the 2013 European Championships. He also clinched a silver medal in the 1,000-meter singles event at the World Championships in Duisburg.

In 2014, Dostál dominated the European Championships with a victory in the 1,000-meter four-person kayak event. He went on to win gold medals in both the singles and four-person kayak events at the World Championships in Moscow.

Focus on Individual Races

After the 2016 Rio Olympics, where Dostál and his team once again won a bronze medal in the four-person kayak event, he announced his decision to leave the team and focus on individual races. This strategy proved successful, as he became a two-time European champion (2017 and 2018) and a world champion (2018) in the 500-meter single kayak event.

Return to the Four-Person Kayak

In 2018, Dostál returned to the four-person kayak team, where he replaced Jakub Špicar and Radek Šlouf. He achieved remarkable success at the 2019 World Championships in Szeged, securing Olympic qualification in both the single kayak and the double kayak events.

Personal Life

Dostál comes from a family of prominent figures. His mother, Eva Emminger-Dostálová, is a well-known singer. His father, Tomáš Bosambo, designed the interior of his new apartment. Dostál was in a relationship with beach volleyball player Diana Zolotová. Currently, he is dating alpine skier Kateřina Paulátová, who represented the Czech Republic at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
