Josef Vlastimil Langer

Josef Vlastimil Langer (1806-1868) was a prominent Czech poet and journalist.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1806, Langer pursued his early education in Hradec Králové. In 1826, he enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Prague, but left without completing his degree.

Journalism

Langer dedicated his life to journalism. He contributed articles and poems to various Czech magazines, often addressing political issues. From 1830-1831, he served as editor of the magazine "Echo Slav."

Poetic Career

Langer published his first book, "Selanky" (Idylls), in 1830. His later poetry drew heavily on folklore traditions.

Exile and Return

In 1836, Langer was forced to leave Prague due to police interference. However, his exile inspired his poetic output, which took on a more rural and nationalistic tone.

Legacy

Langer's collected works were published in two volumes in 1860-1861. His selected works were published in 1917 and 1957, ensuring his legacy as a significant figure in Czech literature.
