Josef Král

Josef Král was a notable Czech singer and composer.
Early Life and Education

Born into a musical family, Král initially attended the Piarist gymnasium. Subsequently, he pursued higher education in Prague, studying philosophy and law. Simultaneously, he honed his musical skills under the tutelage of Václav Jan Tomášek.

Operatic Career

In 1823-1824, Král actively participated in the early operatic productions of Czech operas. His vocal prowess earned him recognition as a singer on the stages of Budapesti, Munich, Stuttgart, and Mainz.

Pedagogical Pursuits

After his successful operatic career, Král shifted his focus to vocal pedagogy. He established himself as a respected voice teacher in Amsterdam and London.

Compositional Legacy

Král's compositional legacy primarily encompassed vocal works. His most renowned piece is the song "T??me se blahou nad?j?." Written in the early 1820s with lyrics by Václav Hanka, this song gained widespread popularity and was mistakenly attributed to folk origins. Notably, Franz Liszt repurposed it into the piano piece "Hussitenlied" (1842).
