Biography of Jozef Vengloš

Jozef Vengloš is a Slovak football coach and former player. He played as a midfielder for Bratislava's "Slovan" from 1954 to 1966. He was once the team captain and played for the Czechoslovak national team. He retired early due to hepatitis and moved to Australia to begin his coaching career. Initially, he managed a club and then the national team of Australia. Upon returning to Czechoslovakia, he became the coach of the under-23 national team. In 1973, Vengloš was appointed as the coach of Bratislava's "Slovan". In his three years at the helm, the team won the national championship twice. Alongside his club work from 1973 to 1978, Vengloš was an assistant coach for the Czechoslovak national team. As an assistant to Václav Ježek, he helped lead the team to win the gold medal at the 1976 European Championship, where they defeated the Netherlands in the semifinals and West Germany in the final. In 1978, Vengloš took over as the head coach of the Czechoslovak national team, leading them to the final of the 1980 European Championship, where they were defeated by West Germany, and to the final stages of the 1982 World Cup, where Czechoslovakia was eliminated after the first round of the tournament. From 1983 to 1984, Vengloš coached Lisbon's "Sporting" before moving to Malaysia to coach a local club and the national team for three years. In 1988, he once again became the head coach of the Czechoslovak national team, leading them to the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup.

After his national team stint, he took over as the manager of English club "Aston Villa," becoming the first foreign and non-Irish coach to lead a top English football division club. However, he was forced to leave after just one season, in which his team narrowly avoided relegation to the First Division. From 1991 to 1993, Vengloš coached Turkish club "Fenerbahçe". In 1993, he became the first coach of the Slovak national team. From 1995 to 1997, Vengloš coached the Oman national team. On July 17, 1998, Vengloš was appointed as the head coach of "Celtic" in Glasgow. Although the team was in excellent form, they failed to win either the league or the cup, losing to their arch-rivals, "Rangers," in both tournaments and failing to qualify for the Champions League. Vengloš stepped down from his coaching position but remained with the club as a technical advisor and scout. He is remembered at "Celtic" for the acquisition of his fellow countryman, Lubomir Moravcik, who became a fan favorite, and for a significant 5-1 victory over their fierce rivals, "Rangers."

In the 2002 season, Vengloš managed Japanese club "JEF United". Afterward, he retired from coaching.
