Joseph Cook: Australia's Sixth Prime Minister

Early Life and Career

Joseph Cook was born in 1860 into a humble family in England. Upon immigrating to Australia in 1885, he worked in coal mines and later became an accountant.

Political Beginnings

Cook entered politics in 1891 when he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a member of the Labor Party. However, a trade policy dispute led him to break away and form a Free Trade faction in 1894.

Federal Politics

Cook transitioned to federal politics in 1901. He served as Minister of Defence under Alfred Deakin and later as Leader of the Opposition.

Premiership

In 1913, Cook led the Liberal Party to a narrow victory and became Prime Minister. His government faced significant challenges, including the outbreak of World War I.

World War I and Opposition

During the war, Cook supported military reforms and joined the Labor government in a coalition. After the war, he served as Deputy Prime Minister under Billy Hughes.

Later Life

In 1921, Cook became the High Commissioner for Australia in London. He returned to Sydney in 1927 and passed away in 1947.
