Johannes von Müller and Swiss History
Professor of Classical Philology and Jesuit CriticJohannes von Müller (1752-1809) was a renowned Swiss historian and Professor of Classical Philology at the Lucerne Lyceum. He vehemently opposed the Jesuits and devoted his life to revising and expanding existing historical narratives of Switzerland.
"Urkunden zur Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde"
Von Müller's meticulous research led to the publication of "Urkunden zur Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde" (Documents on the History of the Swiss Confederacy) from 1835 to 1851. This work introduced substantial corrections to previous historical accounts by scholars such as Aegidius Tschudi and Johannes von Müller.
"Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde"
From 1845 to 1882, von Müller published his magnum opus, "Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde" (History of the Swiss Confederacy). This comprehensive history was later continued by Arnold Busson and Fridolin J. Lütolf.

In addition to his major works, von Müller edited the influential publication "Geschiehtsblätter aus der Schweiz" (Historical Papers from Switzerland) from 1854 to 1856. This journal featured numerous essays challenging established myths surrounding Swiss history, such as his seminal pieces on the Tell and Gessler legends.
Historical Dramas
Beyond his historical scholarship, von Müller also penned several historical dramas. These works were collected and published in Lucerne under the title "Dramatische Werke" (Dramatic Works) from 1855 to 1856.
