Professional debut and early life
Joseph Alberik Fiennes was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and grew up in Ireland. He comes from a family of actors, with his brother Ralph being an actor, and his sister Martha and Sophie working in the film industry. After leaving school, Joseph began working in the youth theatre "Young Vic" before attending a school of musical and dramatic arts.

Stage and film career
Joseph Fiennes made his professional debut in the West End play "The Woman in Black." He then spent two years working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1996, he made his film debut in Bernardo Bertolucci's "Stealing Beauty." The year 1998 proved to be a breakthrough for Fiennes, as he played the role of Robert Dudley in the historical film "Elizabeth," and also starred as the titular character in the Oscar-winning film "Shakespeare in Love."
