Early Life and Education
Born on March 16, 1959, in Flint, Michigan, the astronaut began his educational journey by graduating from Lake Fenton High School in 1977. He went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Mechanics from the United States Air Force Academy in 1981. In 1983, he earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University. He capped off his formal training by completing the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in 1992.
Military Service
From 1981 to 1983, the astronaut embarked on flight training at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. He then served as an F-15 pilot and instructor at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 1983 to 1986. In 1987, he was transferred to Bitburg, Germany, and subsequently joined the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Langley Air Force Base from 1989 to 1992. Following his graduation from the Test Pilot School, he returned to Edwards Air Force Base.
NASA Career
In December 1994, the astronaut was selected for the NASA astronaut corps. He underwent general space training at the NASA Johnson Space Center from March 1995 to March 1996.
Space Missions
- STS-86, October 1997:As a pilot, he participated in a mission to dock with the Russian space station Mir and perform on-board experiments. The mission lasted 10 days, 19 hours, 20 minutes, and 50 seconds.
- STS-97, December 2000:Once again as a pilot, he flew on a mission to deliver supplies to the International Space Station and conducted assembly operations. The mission spanned 10 days, 19 hours, 57 minutes, and 24 seconds.
Awards and Recognition
The astronaut has received various awards, including the Air Force Medal and NASA Space Flight Medals (1997, 2000).
Personal Life
The astronaut is married to Lori Miller, with whom he has two children.
