Josh Brainard: The Gnarly Musician

Background

Josh Brainard, known by his stage name "Gnar", is an American musician best known as the guitarist for the metal band On a Pale Horse. His distinctive nickname stems from his constant knuckle-cracking habit.

Early Career

Before joining Slipknot, Brainard played in several bands, including VeXX, Body Pit, and Inveigh Catharsis. His diverse musical background laid the groundwork for his future success.

Slipknot Years

In September 1995, Brainard joined Slipknot as their guitarist. He contributed to the albums "Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat." and "Slipknot" but was later replaced by James Root. As a founding member, Brainard played a crucial role in shaping the band's sound and identity. Notably, he introduced the band's signature red jumpsuits and helped promote their music extensively.

Post-Slipknot

Upon departing from Slipknot in 1998, Brainard joined the band Undone. He also recorded two albums with Vanilla Ice. These experiences allowed him to explore different musical styles and collaborate with various artists.

On a Pale Horse

Currently, Brainard performs with On a Pale Horse. The band's sound encompasses elements of heavy metal, industrial, and electronic music. Brainard's unique guitar playing and songwriting contributions have significantly influenced the band's success.

Mask of Terror

Brainard's enigmatic stage persona is characterized by his distinctive mask. While it is often referred to as the "Black Death Mask," "Black Knitted Beanie," and "Addiction Mask," the reality is that it is simply a piece of leather stretched over his head, resembling a terrorist's disguise. This mask has become an iconic symbol of both Brainard and On a Pale Horse.
