Joshua Prager is a popular American journalist and author of several books based on real events. Over the past two decades, Prager's name has been familiar to every aspiring journalist in America. Early Years and Education
Prager was born in 1971 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, into a Jewish family and was raised according to Jewish traditions. Even in his early school years, Joshua's interest in books and writing assignments stood out, as they came much easier to him than to his peers. His father, Kenneth Prager, a renowned American physicist and professor at Columbia University, always encouraged his son's endeavors and provided support both at school and at home.
After graduating from Moriah School in New Jersey, Joshua attended the prestigious Ramaz High School in New York. The school was famous for its integrated curriculum that combined secular subjects with the study of Judaism. A few years later, Joshua enrolled at Columbia College in New York to study music theory. It was around this time that he began writing his first articles for magazines, although his popularity came much later.
The Life-Changing Accident and Rehabilitation
After completing his bachelor's degree, Joshua decided to spend a few years in Israel to explore something new and take a break from life in America. Unfortunately, his journey ended tragically. While traveling near Jerusalem, the bus he was on collided with a truck driven by a young Arab man. One person was killed, and the rest, including Prager, were hospitalized in critical condition. The prognosis was bleak, with partial paralysis and months of rehabilitation lying ahead in America.
At the age of 20, Joshua had to relearn how to control his body. Walking, holding a spoon, and driving a car became impossible without assistance. He tirelessly tried to arrange a meeting with the person responsible for the accident, but the young man constantly changed his phone numbers and showed no remorse for the life-altering impact on his victim.
A Career in Journalism and Notable Works
Upon returning to America, Joshua Prager embarked on a career in journalism. His first articles were published in major magazines and newspapers, including Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, where he worked for over eight years. His first book, "The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca, and the Shot Heard 'Round the World," focused on the famous baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, which ended with Bobby Thomson hitting a home run. This iconic home run went down in history as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World." Prager's work received excellent reviews from critics and baseball enthusiasts who discovered numerous unpublished details about the game from his book.
His second work, an autobiography titled "Half Life: Reflections from Jerusalem on a Broken Neck," shared Joshua's personal story and his life after the accident in Israel. In this book, he revealed his first and last meeting with the driver who forever changed his life and pondered the question, "How would life have unfolded if it hadn't happened?" Interestingly, unlike many other similar works, Joshua did not portray himself as an optimist. Through his encounter with the driver, who couldn't even remember the exact number of casualties in the accident, he concluded that not all people possess the ability to feel empathy, and this ability is what distinguishes humans.
A Remarkable Journalism Career
Joshua Prager's journalism career has also been noteworthy. He was the first to publish the name of the photographer behind the renowned photo "Firing Squad in Iran," which received the Pulitzer Prize in 1980. Today, Joshua continues his work as a journalist and frequently gives lectures sharing his personal experiences, insights from his work, and the obstacles we create for ourselves on the path to success and achieving our dreams.
