Mihailo Avakumović: A Serbian Statesman

Early Political Career

Mihailo Avakumović, a prominent Serbian statesman, served as Minister of Justice under the cabinets of Josif Ristić in 1880 and 1887. During the regency period (1892-1893), he held the positions of Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Following his tenure, he pursued a career in law, working as an advocate in Belgrade.

Leadership of the Liberal Party

Upon the death of Josif Ristić in 1899, Avakumović assumed leadership of the Liberal Party. After the assassination of King Alexander Obrenović, he formed a provisional government. The government received the approval of the newly elected King Peter, but resigned in October 1903 following elections.

Fall from Power

The victory of Dimitrije Grujić's cabinet in the 1903 parliamentary elections led to the fall of Avakumović's government. Despite his removal from power, Avakumović remained a significant figure in Serbian politics until his passing.
