Belgian Sculptor: Guillaume Geefs
Guillaume Geefs, a notable Belgian sculptor, embarked on his artistic journey with his brother at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts (1824-1833). Their pursuit of excellence led them to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where they honed their skills under the tutelage of renowned sculptor Jules Étienne Ramey.
Recognition and Laurels
Geefs' exceptional talent was recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, enabling him to immerse himself in the rich artistic heritage of Italy for several years. Upon his return, he became a professor at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts in 1841, ascending to the position of director in 1876. His legacy as a teacher is evident in the renowned sculptor Joseph Lambo, who studied under his guidance.
Royal Recognition and Notable Works
In 1846, Geefs was inducted as a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium. His impressive portfolio includes the equestrian statue of Leopold I in Antwerp, the sculptural groups adorning Bruges Town Hall, Antwerp's Bourla Theater, Antwerp Zoo, and the former North Station in Brussels.
The "Spirit of Evil"
One of Geefs' most famous works is the "Spirit of Evil" statue, originally intended for the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Liège (1842). The parish, however, deemed the statue too distracting and returned it. Subsequently, Geefs' statue was replaced with that of his brother Guillaume, while the "Spirit of Evil" now resides in the Brussels Museum of Modern Art.
