Julia Bonk: A Young Voice in German Politics

Julia Bonk is a German social and political activist who served as a member of the Left Party in the Saxon State Parliament from 2004 to 2014. From June 2012 to 2014, she was also part of the national leadership of the Left Party, representing the libertarian socialist faction known as "Emancipatory Left."

Early Life and Activism

Bonk's political involvement began at a young age. At 14, she joined the Dresden city student council and was elected deputy spokesperson for the Saxony state student council. At 18, she gained national notoriety for her controversial proposal to legalize marijuana and heroin, arguing that it should be graded for consumption by people aged 14 and above.

Bonk's remarks, in which she also admitted to drug use, were met with criticism from the Left Party's parliamentary group leader in Saxony, Peter Porsch.

Political Career

Despite the controversy, Bonk was elected to the Saxon State Parliament in 2004, shortly after completing high school. She became a member of the Left Party's parliamentary group and the youngest member of any German state parliament. She officially joined the Left Party in 2006.

During her time in the fourth legislative period of the Saxon State Parliament (2004-2009), Bonk served as deputy spokesperson for the Committee on School and Sports and was also a member of the Committee on Science and Higher Education. She did not participate in the 2014 state parliament elections due to health reasons.

Education and Later Career

Bonk completed her secondary education at the Romain Rolland Gymnasium and went on to study political science and history at the Dresden Technical University, graduating with a Master of Arts degree. After leaving politics, she pursued a career in academia and public relations.
