Early Life and Education
Constantin Dumitrescu was born into a family with strong political affiliations. His father, Dumitru Dumitrescu, was a member of the National Peasant Party and ran for parliament in 1946.
Political Persecution and Imprisonment
Following the banning of the National Peasant Party in 1947, Constantin Dumitrescu was expelled from university. He was subsequently arrested and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. After his release in 1953, he was placed under house arrest. In 1958, he was arrested again and remained imprisoned until 1964.
Post-Communism Career
After the overthrow of Nicolae Ceausescu's regime, Constantin Dumitrescu became the head of the National Association of Former Political Prisoners. From 1992 to 2000, he served as a member of parliament.
Access to Security Archives
In 1999, Dumitrescu played a key role in the passage of a law granting Romanian citizens access to their own files from the archives of the Romanian security service during the communist era. He subsequently became a member of the national commission established to oversee implementation of this law.
