Early Life and Activism
Horace Julian Bondwas born on January 14, 1940, in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1945, his family relocated to Pennsylvania, where his father became the first African American president of Lincoln University. Bond attended private preparatory school and later enrolled at Morehouse College in 1957.
At Morehouse, Bond joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and co-founded the Pegasus Bookshop. He also worked for "Time" magazine and participated in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s only teaching assignment.
Political Career
Civil Rights Advocate:In 1965, Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, where he served four terms and founded the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus. From 1975 to 1986, he held a seat in the Georgia Senate for six terms.
Education and Scholarship:Concurrently with his political career, Bond taught at several universities, including American University, Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and Drexel University.
Personal Life and Legacy
Family and Relationships:Bond married Alice Clopton in 1961, and they had five children before divorcing in 1989. He remarried in 1990 to attorney Pamela S. Horowitz.
Current Engagements:As of 2023, Bond is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Virginia and holds a role as Distinguished Visiting Professor at American University. He continues to lecture and write on civil rights history and contemporary issues.
