Childhood and Early Life
Juliet Rylance was born on July 26, 1979, in the affluent Hammersmith district of London, England. Her mother, Claire van Kampen, was a British stage and film actress, while her father, Chris van Kampen, was an architect. After her parents' divorce when she was seven, she was raised by her stepfather, actor and playwright Mark Rylance.
Education and Early Career
Rylance developed a passion for the arts from a young age, thanks to her parents. She briefly worked as a barista before attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on the advice of her then-boyfriend.
Theatre and Film Roles
Rylance's acting career began with a role as Cressida in a production of William Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida" at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. She went on to perform at the Chichester Festival Theatre and the Union Theatre before relocating to New York. In 2009, she was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance as Desdemona in "Othello."
Rylance made her notable film debut in Scott Derrickson's horror film "Sinister," where she played the wife of Ethan Hawke's character. She also appeared in Steven Soderbergh's medical drama "The Knick," "Sinister 2," and the adventure film "A Dog's Purpose." In 2018, she portrayed the fiancé in the BBC series "McMafia," which explored the lives of Russian mobsters.
In 2020, Rylance played the role of Della Street, secretary to Perry Mason, in the HBO detective series "Perry Mason." She meticulously studied the works of American writer Erle Stanley Gardner to embody the character and noted the transformative effect of wearing period shoes on her gait.
Personal Life
Rylance met her future husband, actor and producer Christian Camargo, through her stepfather in London's Globe Theatre. Despite their age difference, they married in November 2008 after a period of courtship. The couple traveled extensively and performed together on stage, including in a production of Shakespeare's "As You Like It." However, their marriage ended in 2012, with Camargo retaining custody of their beloved dog, Garth.
Since 2018, Rylance has been in a relationship with American actor David Conrad. She has no children.
Activism and Recent Projects
Rylance is known for her political activism and animal rights advocacy. She has been an outspoken critic of former US President Donald Trump and has urged her followers to vote. She has also campaigned against climate change, deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, and for an end to armed conflicts worldwide through her work with Peace One Day.
Continuing her acting career, Rylance appeared in the 2024 film "Arthur the King," an adaptation of Michael Lindnord's autobiography about a stray dog's journey home.
