Early Life and Education

Jonas Greifenbergeris was born in Lithuania and attended high school in Smolensk, Russia.

Involvement in the Communist Movement

In 1918, Greifenbergeris became a participant in the first congress of the Russian Communist Youth Union (RKSM), a precursor to the Komsomol. Later that year, he joined the leadership of the RKSM in the Western Region and became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth Union of Belarus.

International Activities

In February 1920, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Communist Youth International (KIM).

Underground Work in Lithuania

Later that year, Greifenbergeris was sent to Lithuania to engage in underground work. He served as the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth Union of Lithuania (KML) from 1920 to 1922 and edited the newspaper "Young Communist."

Leadership Roles within the Communist Party of Lithuania

From 1921, Greifenbergeris was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (CPL). In 1923, he joined the Organizational Bureau of the Central Committee, and in 1926, he became a member of the Political Bureau. He also represented the CPL as a delegate to the Third Congress of the Communist International (Comintern) in 1921.

Arrest and Execution

After a coup in Lithuania in December 1926, Greifenbergeris and other CPL leaders were arrested and tried by a military tribunal. He was sentenced to death along with Kazys Gedris, Rapolas Čarnas, and Karolis Požėla. Two other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment and eight years, respectively. The death sentences were carried out on December 27, 1926, at the Sixth Fort of Kaunas.

Legacy

Jonas Greifenbergeris is remembered as a prominent figure in the Lithuanian communist movement. His involvement in the underground fight against the fascist regime in Lithuania and his unwavering commitment to communist ideals make him a significant figure in the history of Lithuania.
