The Art of Air Guitar
Every year since 1996, the Air Guitar World Championships have been held in Oulu, Finland. Contestants showcase their artistic and convincing performances of playing imaginary guitars. Rock star and child psychologist Dee Snider believes that almost every teenager has spent countless hours miming guitar playing in front of a mirror.
A Legacy of Imagination
Despite the seemingly silly premise, the championship is taken seriously by organizers. They believe that the universal hobby of air guitar can alleviate global issues such as conflicts and climate change. While these claims may be debated, the contest has gained significant popularity.
A Champion of Virtuality
In 2012, American Justin "Nordic Thunder" Howard emerged victorious as the Air Guitar World Champion. Donning a leather tunic befitting his Viking alter ego, Howard's performance followed his national championship win and marked his second appearance on the international stage, where he had previously placed second. He narrowly edged out fellow American, Matt "Airistotle" Burns, with a score of 34.6 to 34.4.
Beyond the Podium
Beyond the title, Howard's triumph was fueled by the audience's energetic reaction. Despite winning an actual guitar as part of his prize, it's unlikely that he will abandon his beloved air guitar hobby.
