Biography of Justin Stewart
Justin Stewart, known professionally as Bruce LaBruce, is a Canadian journalist, actor, photographer, and film director. He was born on January 3, 1964, in the small Canadian town of Southampton. From childhood, he had a passion for cinema.
Journalism and Photography
Stewart began his career as a commentator for the Canadian music magazine Exclaim! and later worked for Eye weekly. He spent many years as a photographer and editor for Index magazine. He gained public attention through his publications in J.D.s magazine. Currently, he writes and photographs for various magazines and websites, such as Nerve.com and Black Book Magazine.
Film Career
LaBruce entered the film industry in the late 1980s. In 1991, he directed his first feature film, in which he played the lead role alongside his gay partner. Many of his films feature gay skinheads as characters. One of his most famous films, released in 2004, is "The Raspberry Reich." The film portrays terrorists who declare a "homosexual intifada" and label heterosexuality as the "opium of the people." LaBruce received two awards at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival for "The Raspberry Reich," including the prize for the best unjustified use of sex.
