Early Life and EducationJuwan Antonio Howard, born on February 7, 1973, is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA. He successfully completed his education at the Chicago Vocational Career Academy and gained recognition for his role in the high school basketball documentary film "Hoop Dreams."
College Career
After three years of studying at Michigan, Howard left the university to join the Washington Bullets after being selected fifth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft. Although the final four games of the "Fab Five" were later canceled due to a scandal, Howard did not face legal consequences as it was not proven that he had received a large sum of money.
Professional Career
Howard became the first NBA player to be drafted so early while still managing to complete his education with his graduating class. When his college teammate and friend Chris Webber also joined the Washington team, many believed that the reunion of the "Fab Five" would benefit the Bullets. However, injuries kept Webber, along with Mark Price and Robert Pack, out for most of the 1995-1996 season, causing the team to miss the playoffs.
Howard became the second player in Washington Bullets history to play in two consecutive forty-point games. He averaged 22.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, earning him a spot in the All-Star team for the first and only time in his career. The following year, Howard signed a $101 million contract with the Miami Heat, which was later declared invalid by the NBA due to salary rules. He then returned to Washington and became the first NBA player to sign a contract worth more than $100 million, earning $105 million over seven years with the Bullets.
After Michael Jordan joined the Washington team, Howard was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, who later traded him to the Denver Nuggets. He then signed a new contract with the Orlando Magic. In June 2007, Howard joined the Minnesota Timberwolves, hoping to play alongside Kevin Garnett, but Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics shortly after Howard's arrival. Disappointed, Howard demanded a trade but was denied by the team's owner, Glen Taylor. The Timberwolves eventually placed Howard on the draft, and he later reached an agreement with the Dallas Mavericks.
In 2008, Howard returned to the Denver Nuggets but left shortly after the trade involving Allen Iverson. On December 12, 2008, he signed a contract with the Charlotte Bobcats. On September 17, 2009, Juwan Howard signed a one-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.
