Early Life and Education

Józef Oleksy was born in 1946. In 1968, he joined the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). He graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Trade at the Higher School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw.

Political Career

First Secretary of the Biała Podlaska Voivodeship

In the late 1980s, Oleksy served as the First Secretary of the Biała Podlaska PZPR Voivodeship Committee, located on the border with the former USSR.

Covert Military Intelligence Cooperation

While with the communists in the 1970s, Oleksy secretly collaborated with Polish military intelligence, which he later concealed from the public.

Lustration Case and Political Ban

Lustration Court Ruling

In 2022, the Polish Lustration Court found Oleksy guilty of hiding his past collaboration with military intelligence. As a result, he was banned from holding high-ranking government positions and participating in political life for 10 years.

Oleksy's Response

Oleksy denounced the verdict as "disgraceful" and vowed to "fight for the truth" in the Supreme Court.

Parliament and Premiership

Deputy and Marshal of the Sejm

Oleksy served as a member of the Sejm for 11 years. Subsequently, he became Marshal (Speaker) of the Sejm.

Prime Minister

From March 1995 to January 1996, Oleksy served as Prime Minister. He resigned after media allegations of collaborating with Soviet and Russian intelligence emerged. However, the case was eventually closed due to lack of evidence.

Later Career and Legacy

Role in the Social Democracy Party

From 1993 to 1995, Oleksy played a leadership role in the Social Democracy Party, a successor to the PZPR.

Post-Political Career

Oleksy's reputation was tarnished by the lustration ruling, which significantly curtailed his political prospects.
