Early Life and EducationJyrki Katainen, born in Siilinjärvi, Finland, completed his high school education at the Siilinjärvi Lyceum in 1990. He went on to pursue higher education, earning a Master of Social Sciences degree from the University of Tampere in 1998.
Political Career
Early BeginningsKatainen's political journey began in 1993 when he became a member of the Siilinjärvi Municipal Council. In 1999, he was elected to represent The National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) in the Finnish Parliament, the Eduskunta.
Deputy Chairman of Kokoomus (2001-2004)
In 2001, Katainen became the Deputy Chairman of Kokoomus. Three years later, in 2004, he ascended to the position of Party Chairman.
Minister of Finance (2007-2011)
In 2007, Katainen was appointed as Minister of Finance in the second cabinet of Matti Vanhanen. European Commissioner for Finance (July 2014)In July 2014, the European Parliament approved Katainen's nomination as European Commissioner for Finance. He replaced Olli Rehn, who had been elected to the European Parliament and subsequently became Vice-President of the European Parliament.

In September 2014, Jean-Claude Juncker unveiled the composition of his European Commission, appointing Katainen as Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment, and Competitiveness. He assumed this role in November 2014.
