Childhood and Education

Lisa Nandy was born in 1979 in Bury, Greater Manchester, to Deepak Nandy, a Marxist and anti-racist campaigner of Indian origin, and Louise Byers, the daughter of Liberal politician Lord Byers. She grew up in Bury and studied politics at Newcastle University.

Early Career and Political Involvement

Nandy worked for several charities before being elected as a Labour councilor in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. In 2010, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Wigan with 48.5% of the vote.

Shadow Cabinet Appointments

On September 15, 2015, Nandy was appointed Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet. However, she resigned on June 27, 2016, in response to Corbyn's leadership following the UK's vote to leave the European Union.

Leadership Campaign and Shadow Foreign Secretary

In 2020, Nandy announced her candidacy for the Labour Party leadership. While she placed third in the election, she was appointed Shadow Foreign Secretary in Keir Starmer's Shadow Cabinet on April 5, 2020.
