Kabakaly Atanusov: A Renowned Kyrgyz Epic Reciter
Early Life and Childhood DreamKabakaly Atanusov was born in the village of Tort-Kul in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. At the tender age of 12, he lost his father, who had been a staunch supporter of his son's pursuit of the epic tale "Manas."
One fateful day at nine years old, while tending his cows, Kabakaly had a vivid dream. He envisioned a thundering herd of horses with only their hooves visible and a lone rider approaching. The rider, an elderly man, extended his hand and took Kabakaly behind him on his steed. They crossed the rushing Ton River, and the old man gently lowered Kabakaly to the ground. With the words, "Now go, my son," the rider vanished. Filled with trepidation, Kabakaly awoke on the far side of the river where he had been left.
The Vision of the Epic Warriors
Within a month, Kabakaly began to feel a strange urge to express himself. One night, in another dream, a powerful figure appeared before him. "Arise and open your eyes!" the figure commanded, pointing to a vast army of warriors on horseback. Kabakaly gazed in awe and fear at the armed host.
The figure identified the warriors: "This is Bakai, with Manas, Chubak, Syrgak, Ajybai, and Majik beside him. On the left, you see the warriors of Konurbai, including Neskara and Joloy. And I am Almambet."
"When the banner falls," the figure instructed, "you will begin to narrate all that you see."
Excelling in Education
Despite his unusual childhood experiences, Kabakaly excelled in his formal education. At the age of 12, he enrolled in a school named after Joseph Stalin, completing a three-year curriculum in just one year. He graduated with honors in 1944 and continued his studies at the Frunze Pedagogical College, specializing in Russian language and literature.
Recognition and Legacy
Kabakaly Atanusov's mastery of the "Manas" epic earned him recognition as a National Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic in 1995. His unique storytelling abilities and dedication to preserving this ancient tradition have left an enduring mark on Kyrgyz culture.
