Early Life and Education
Kamal Khera, a Canadian nurse, politician, and stateswoman, is currently the Minister for Seniors of Canada. Born in the Indian city of Delhi, she immigrated to Canada as a child. Khera excelled academically, graduating with honors from York University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Career in Healthcare and Media
Khera's career in healthcare spans various institutions, including the Centre of Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH), Peel Family Shelter, and William Osler Health Centre. She also served as a nurse in the Oncology Department of St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto. Additionally, Khera hosted "Youth Vision," a local television show focused on issues affecting young South Asian Canadians.
Political Career
In 2015, Khera entered the political arena, securing a seat in the Canadian House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Brampton West under the Liberal Party of Canada. Her parliamentary career includes serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development.
Pandemic and Controversies
In 2020, Khera became the first member of the Canadian House of Commons to test positive for SARS-CoV-2. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered at a long-term care facility in Brampton. However, in 2021, Khera faced controversy for traveling across the border to attend a funeral during pandemic-related restrictions. She subsequently resigned from her parliamentary secretary position.
Return to Cabinet
Despite the controversy, Khera regained her seat in Parliament in 2021 and was appointed Minister for Seniors on October 26, 2021. She is one of the youngest members of Canada's Cabinet and Privy Council.
