Chinese Construction Worker Survives 10-Foot Metal Rod Through Skull

A Chinese construction worker miraculously survived after a 3-meter (10-foot) metal rod impaled his skull. The rod, which fell from scaffolding, pierced through the 56-year-old man's skull, identified as Kan JIe, approximately 20 centimeters.

Emergency Response and Medical Evacuation

The incident occurred on July 28th at a construction site in China's Gansu Province. Firefighters promptly arrived and used hydraulic cutters to remove a portion of the rod, shortening it to 30 centimeters. Kan was then transported to a local hospital for a CT scan before being transferred to Xi'an's Xijing Hospital.

Complex Surgical Procedure

A team of experts assembled at Xijing Hospital for an emergency surgical intervention. The complex three-hour surgery, which began around 10 PM, involved carefully removing the rod, repairing damaged tissues, and reconstructing the skull.

Challenges of the Operation

Neurosurgeon Dr. Lin Wei, who led the surgery, emphasized the difficulty of a brain injury procedure. "Extracting the rod posed a unique challenge due to the risk of further damage to the brain," he said.

Positive Outcome and Recovery

Despite the extensive trauma, Kan has experienced no complications and is currently on the mend. Hospital staff anticipate him being discharged within the week.
