A Misdiagnosed Journey
At the age of 19, Jo began experiencing symptoms such as hot flushes, cramps, and diarrhea. Unfortunately, doctors dismissed her complaints as irritable bowel syndrome, a common gastrointestinal disorder. Years of misdiagnosis followed, delaying the discovery of the underlying cause.

In 2011, Jo faced excruciating abdominal pain that landed her in the hospital. Tests revealed that her body was riddled with a rare and slow-growing cancer, forming a network of tumors throughout her neuroendocrine system, a collection of nerve cells scattered throughout various organs.
Extensive Surgery and Recovery
Jo underwent a lengthy surgery in 2011 to remove a "cobweb of tumors" that had spread to her bowel, bladder, and reproductive organs. Surgeons also removed nearly a meter of her intestine to address the debilitating cramps and diarrhea. Although the surgery was successful in removing the visible tumors, Jo was informed that the cancer could return at any time.
The Impact on Health and Lifestyle
The diagnosis and treatment of her cancer have had a significant impact on Jo's life. Despite her healthy lifestyle, the cancer's delayed detection has left her with ongoing health issues. She continues to receive injections to manage her symptoms and undergoes regular scans to monitor for any recurrence.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare tumors that arise in the neuroendocrine system, a network of cells that produce and release hormones. They can be benign or malignant, and often grow slowly. NETs can occur in various parts of the body, causing a wide range of symptoms, including diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and breathing problems.
