Julius Aibl: A German General in World War II
Early Life and Military CareerJulius Aibl was a German general born to a civil servant in the road construction department. He graduated from the Theresian Military Academy and joined the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1914, where he commanded a platoon and later a company. During World War I, he earned numerous Austrian honors, including four orders and four medals.
Service in the Bundesheer and Wehrmacht
After the war, Aibl continued his service in the Austrian Bundesheer, commanding companies and later battalions. In 1938, following the Anschluss, he joined the Wehrmacht as a battalion commander, a position he retained until 1939 when he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
World War II
Polish and French CampaignsAibl participated in the Polish Campaign and was awarded the Iron Crosses of both classes. He then commanded the 132nd Infantry Regiment in the French Campaign and received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
Eastern Front
In 1941, Aibl was assigned to the Eastern Front and commanded the 385th Infantry Division. He participated in the battles of Zhitomir, Kiev, and Kharkov, earning the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross in December 1941.
Commander of the 24th Panzer Corps
In January 1943, Aibl was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed commander of the 24th Panzer Corps. He was killed on January 21, 1943, when his staff car was attacked by Italian soldiers who mistook it for a Soviet vehicle.
