Karl Heinrich Ritter von Lang: German Historian and Publicist

Early Life and Education

Born on June 7, 1764, in Mettingen, Bavaria, Karl Heinrich Ritter von Lang developed a keen interest in history and cartography from a young age. He attended the gymnasium in Ettingen and later studied law at the University of Altdorf. However, he left law school before graduation to take up a position as a civil servant in Ettingen.

Journalism and Publicism

Around 1785, Lang began a career as a journalist and publicist. His outspoken nature and controversial views often led to job losses. He worked as a secretary, tutor, and advisor before settling in Göttingen in 1792.

Historical Studies in Göttingen

In Göttingen, Lang studied the history of the Holy Roman Empire under the guidance of renowned scholars such as Johann Müller and Friedrich Schlegel. Between 1793 and 1801, he was affiliated with the Hardenberg municipality, where he served as an archivist and secretary.

Political Activities and Historical Research

Lang's reputation led to his appointment as secretary of the Rastatt Congress from 1797 to 1799. This experience expanded his research interests to contemporary Prussian history. Until the 1810s, he focused on political activities while continuing to study historical geography.

Later Career and Retirement

In 1808, Lang received the Order of Civil Merit of the Bavarian Crown. From 1810 onwards, he resumed his career as a publicist, studying Bavarian history based on archival research. In 1817, he retired to Ansbach, where he continued to write until his death on March 26, 1835.
