Childhood and Education
Born on July 26, 1818, in the village of Nuknica, Jakub Bart-Ćišinski hailed from a humble Sorbian peasant family. From 1830, he embarked on his education at the Lusatian Seminary in Prague, completing his studies in 1837. Concurrently, he enrolled in the Malá Strana Gymnasium.
Theology and Priesthood
Bart-Ćišinski pursued theological and philosophical studies at Charles University from 1837 to 1842. Upon his return to Lusatia, he was ordained as a priest on October 21, 1842, in Dresden. Subsequently, he served as a vicar in the Sorbian church in Bautzen from December 1, 1842.
Cultural and Ecclesiastical Activism
In 1844, Bart-Ćišinski became an administrator of the parish in Mišnjo. From 1846, he held various positions in Bautzen. Notably, he co-founded the Sorbian cultural and educational organization "Maćica Serbska." He served as its secretary from 1847-1849, 1850-1856, and 1857-1860.
Upon the establishment of the Sorbian cultural and social organization Society of Saints Cyril and Methodius in 1862, Bart-Ćišinski became its chairman, a position he held until his passing in 1898. In 1856, he was appointed rector of the parish in Našecy.
Literary Contributions
Bart-Ćišinski's literary endeavors included the publication of the book "Serbske Hornje Łużycy" in 1848, providing statistical information on Sorbian religious communities. He authored the novella "Jutrowne jejka" in 1848 and "Dobre symjo" in 1852. From November 1848 to December 1850, he founded and edited the weekly magazine "Jutrnička."
Recognition and Legacy
In recognition of his contributions, Bart-Ćišinski was bestowed with the Saxon Knight's Cross. The Pope Leo XIII also awarded him the Cross "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" in 1960. He passed away on July 28, 1898, and was laid to rest on July 1, 1898, at St. Nikolaj's Cemetery in Bautzen.
