Biography of Karl-Heinz Jüling
Karl-Heinz Jüling was a German military officer who held the rank of Hauptsturmführer SS during World War II. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his exceptional bravery on the battlefield.
Early Life and Membership in Nazi Party
Karl was born in Dorndorf, Eisenach. On March 22, 1932, he joined the Hitler Youth and later distinguished himself as an outstanding member of the movement, earning several commendations. On September 1, 1937, Jüling joined the Nazi Party. In February 1938, he passed his high school exams and on April 1, 1938, he joined the SS-VT and was assigned to the Totenkopf Division. It was within this division that Karl participated in the Polish campaign.
Officer Training and Service on the Front
In 1940, Jüling was selected for officer training and was sent to Braunschweig. He completed the courses from February to May 1940 and in August of the same year, he was promoted to the rank of Untersturmführer. Returning to the front as an officer, Jüling was wounded and transferred to a reserve infantry training battalion. After recovering from his injuries, he was transferred to the 1st SS Infantry Brigade.
Awards and Command
As a platoon leader and adjutant, Jüling received the War Merit Cross (1st and 2nd Class, with Swords) and the Iron Cross (1st and 2nd Class). In November 1943, he was promoted to the rank of Hauptsturmführer and transferred to the Western Front, serving in the 2nd SS Panzer Corps.
In June 1944, Jüling was transferred to the 10th SS Panzer Division Frundsberg. During the Battle of Normandy, he commanded a motorized infantry regiment. The regiment was later withdrawn to Arnhem for reorganization and their new mission was to prevent the advance of the Allied forces during Operation Market Garden. The German positions were strategically chosen, effectively slowing down the Allied progress. On September 19, 1944, Hauptsturmführer Jüling and his battalion successfully defended the bridge at Nijmegen, preventing the Allied forces from advancing towards Arnhem. It was for his courage and exceptional leadership displayed during these battles that Jüling was awarded the Knight's Cross.
