Early Life and Career
Born in Düren, Germany, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger began his football career at FC Düren. As a promising young player, he caught the attention of the national team and was included in the squad for the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden.
Rise to Stardom
After the World Cup, Schnellinger joined 1. FC Köln, where he quickly became a star. He won the Bundesliga title in 1962 and was named German Footballer of the Year. His outstanding performances earned him recognition in Europe, finishing third in the Ballon d'Or rankings that year.
International Success
Schnellinger made his international debut in 1958 and went on to represent West Germany in 47 matches. He was part of the team that finished second at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, and played a crucial role in the team's famous 4-3 extra-time semi-final defeat to Italy in the 1970 World Cup.
Pioneer in Italy
In 1963, Schnellinger became one of the first successful German footballers to play abroad, signing for AC Mantova in Italy. He later joined AS Roma and AC Milan, where he achieved his greatest successes. He won the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, the European Cup (becoming the first German to lift the trophy), the Intercontinental Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup with Milan.
Later Career and Legacy
After his time in Italy, Schnellinger returned to Germany to play for Tennis Borussia Berlin. He ended his career in 1973. Schnellinger passed away on May 20, 2024, at the age of 85. His name remains synonymous with excellence in German and international football.
