Karl Kreil
Karl Kreil was an Austrian astronomer and meteorologist. He served as the director of the astronomical observatory in Prague from 1845 to 1851. In 1851, he became the director of the central meteorological and magnetic station in Vienna, which he had established.
Early Career
Kreil's early work focused on terrestrial magnetism. He conducted extensive observations in Milan, Prague, and Vienna over many years. These studies were published in "Effemeridi astronomiche" (Milan, 1834), "Magnet. und Meteorol. Beobachtungen" (Prague, 1839-1850), and the yearbook of the Vienna Central Station (1854-1861).
Contributions to Meteorology
Kreil was actively involved in meteorology and contributed numerous articles to Poggendorff's "Annalen der Physik und Chemie" and publications of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. He published several notable works, including "Über die Natur und Bewegung der Kometen" (1843) and "Magnet. und geograph. Ortsbestimmung im Österreichischen Kaiserstaate" (Vienna, 1846-1851).
Legacy
Kreil's contributions to astronomy and meteorology left a lasting impact on the scientific community.
