Early Life and Education
Moritz Kassowitz was born in Hungary and studied medicine in Vienna, where he earned his doctorate in 1863. He spent many years as an assistant to the renowned physician L. Politzer.
Academic Career
Kassowitz became a private lecturer in pediatrics in 1885 and a professor of the subject in 1891. He specialized in treating syphilis and rickets.
A Medical Breakthrough: The Misattribution of Phosphorus Treatment
Kassowitz's name is associated with a serendipitous discovery in medical history. Believing that phosphorus was an effective treatment for rickets, he prescribed it dissolved in cod liver oil to improve absorption. However, it was the cod liver oil itself that proved to be beneficial in alleviating the condition.

He also published a journal, Beiträge zur Kinderheilkunde aus dem I. öffentlichen Kinderkrankeninstitute in Wien. Kassowitz's contributions to the field of pediatrics left a lasting legacy, shaping the understanding and treatment of childhood illnesses.
