Karoline Edtstadler is an Austrian politician and lawyer who has served as the Minister for European and Constitutional Affairs in the Austrian government since 2020. She has held various roles within the government and is known for her expertise in European law and human rights.
Early Life and Education
Karoline Edtstadler was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1981. She attended the Salzburg Music Gymnasium from 1991 to 1999 and later pursued a Masters in Jurisprudence at the University of Salzburg from 1999 to 2004.
Early Political Career
In 2004, Edtstadler joined the municipal council of Henndorf am Wallersee and served in that capacity until 2016. She went on to work as a lawyer for the European Court of Human Rights from 2016 to 2017 before being appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior in 2017.
European Parliament Membership
In 2019, Edtstadler was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). She served as head of the ÖVP delegation until 2020 when she resigned upon her appointment to the Austrian government.
Minister for European and Constitutional Affairs
On January 7, 2020, Edtstadler was appointed Minister for European and Constitutional Affairs in the second Kurz government. In this role, she is responsible for negotiating with the European Union (EU) on behalf of Austria and for coordinating constitutional matters.
