Renat Usatii: The Man of the People
Humble BeginningsRenat Usatii, the charismatic Moldovan politician and businessman, was born on November 4, 1978, in Falesti, Moldova. Growing up in a modest family of teachers, Usatii exhibited a strong character from a young age. He was patient, compassionate, and determined to make a difference.
Educational and Professional Journey
Usatii excelled academically, earning first place in an English language Olympiad. This allowed him to enter the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Alecu Russo State University in Balti, where his parents had also studied.
After graduating, Usatii began his career as a volunteer at the Baltic International Forum in 1999. He then worked as a supervisor at Chisinau International Airport and as a leading engineer at the Moldovan Railways catering company. In 2004, he moved to Russia and became the head of VPT-NN, the main supplier of hardened tools to Russian Railways.
Return to Moldova and Philanthropy
In 2012, Usatii returned to Moldova and dedicated himself to public service and philanthropy. He became a senior vice-president of the Moscow Union of Railway Builders. He also established the Renat Usatii Charitable Foundation in 2015, which supports local initiatives and develops regional infrastructure.
Political Career and Challenges
In 2014, Usatii became the leader of the People's Republican Party (NRP), later renamed Our Party. He gained prominence by exposing large-scale corruption schemes involving the theft of billions of dollars from Moldova's banking system, a scandal known as "the stolen billion."
Despite his popularity, Usatii faced numerous obstacles from political rivals. In 2015, he was detained by authorities but later released due to public pressure. General prosecutions were opened against him for his alleged threats during protests and a false accusation of ordering the murder of a banker.
International Support and Setbacks
In 2017, Usatii signed a cooperation agreement with Vladimir Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR). However, he was prevented from running for president due to a raised age requirement. The European Court of Human Rights later accepted a complaint from Usatii's lawyers alleging numerous violations by the Moldovan prosecution.
Resignation and Interpol Clearance
In 2018, Usatii resigned as mayor of Balti after the central authorities attempted to block his work. The same year, Interpol removed him from its database and ceased his search, acknowledging the political motivations behind the charges against him.
