Krishnaite Saint: Kashishvara Pandit
Kashishvara Pandit was a Krishnaite saint who lived in Bengal and Orissa during the late 15th to early 16th centuries. He was a contemporary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and resided with him in Puri. Kashishvara was a disciple of Ishvara Puri, who was also Chaitanya's spiritual master.
Service to Chaitanya
Physically strong and devoted, Kashishvara played a crucial role in protecting Chaitanya from the surging crowds during his visits to the Jagannatha temple in Puri. He also distributed prasadam after kirtanas.
Arrival in Vrindavan
When Chaitanya requested Kashishvara to relocate to Vrindavan and worship Rupa Goswami's deity of Govindaji, Kashishvara lamented the impending separation from his beloved master. Out of compassion for his loyal servant, Chaitanya gifted him the deity of Gaura-Govinda, depicting himself as Krishna playing the flute.
Establishing Gaudiya Vaishnavism in Vrindavan
Overjoyed, Kashishvara Pandit settled in Vrindavan and dedicated himself to serving Gaura-Govinda and Govindaji. The original deities of Gaura-Govinda and Govindaji are currently enshrined in the popular Govindaji Temple in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Lineage and Legacy
Kashishvara's father was Vasudeva Bhattacharya, a descendant of the Kanjilala Kanu family. His ancestral name was Chowdhury. His nephew, Rudra Pandit, was the first priest of the Vallabhapur temple located near Kolkata. The temple houses deities of Radha-Govinda and Chaitanya.
Connection to Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
In his youth, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada visited the Vallabhapur temple and received prasadam. According to the "Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika," Kashishvara was the reincarnation of Bhingara, a servant of Krishna in Vrindavan.
Samadhi
Kashishvara Pandit passed away in Vrindavan. His samadhi is located in the 64 Samadhis area.
