Kat Von D is an American tattoo artist and television personality. She discovered her talent for artistic tattoos by accident when she tattooed a gothic letter "J" on her ankle as a tribute to a past love. Her friends were so impressed by the beauty and precision of the design that they encouraged her to pursue tattooing seriously.
Early Life and Background
Kat Von D, whose real name is Katherine von Drachenberg, was born on March 8, 1982, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Her father, Rene von Drachenberg, was originally from Germany, and her mother, Silvia Galeano, had Spanish-Italian roots. The family moved from Argentina to Mexico before eventually settling in Inland Empire, California, in the United States when Kat was four years old.
At a young age, Kat's grandmother predicted her creative future, and she began taking piano lessons at the age of six. While she initially enjoyed classical music, her passion for punk rock took over by the time she turned twelve.
Career in Tattooing
Kat Von D's journey as a tattoo artist began when she tattooed her own body. She covered herself with emblems of her favorite rock bands, such as HIM, Turbonegro, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Slayer, and Metallica. In 1998, she started her professional tattooing career at Sin City Tattoo near her home. After a year and a half of successful work, Kat Von D moved to Pasadena and worked at Blue Bird Tattoo. Over the following years, she worked at Red Hot Tattoo in Arcadia and True Tattoo in Covina, where she had the opportunity to work with renowned tattoo masters like Clay Decker and Chris Garver.
While working at True Tattoo, Kat Von D built a reputation and attracted a diverse clientele, including celebrities like rapper Ja Rule, members of the rock band HIM, rapper The Game, Carey King of Slayer, Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, Mike Kroeger of Nickelback, singers Dave Navarro and Lady Gaga, and many others. It was during this time that she also met her future husband, Oliver Peck, a tattoo artist from the Elm Street Tattoo in Dallas.
Television and Other Ventures
In 2007, Kat Von D was invited to appear on television. She starred in the show "Miami Ink," later renamed "LA Ink," which aired on TLC. In these live shows, Kat tattooed clients, provided advice, and taught beginner tattoo artists. She also launched her own line of beauty products, "Sephora," and organized the Musink Festival, a festival for tattoo enthusiasts. In January 2009, she released her book "High Voltage Tattoo," which delves into her life as an artist, showcases her portfolio, and provides insights into the world of tattooing. Additionally, in 2009, she starred in the film "The Bleeding" alongside actors Vinny Jones, Michael Madsen, Michael Matthias, and rapper DMX.
