Early Life and Education
Martha MacCallum was born and raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, the daughter of Elizabeth B. and Douglas C. MacCallum Jr. She graduated from Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. She then studied at the Circle in the Square Theatre School on Broadway, founding the Miranda Theatre Company in New York City.
Corporate and Broadcasting Career
Before pursuing journalism, MacCallum worked as a corporate relations attorney for Dow Jones & Company. Her broadcasting career began with the Wall Street Journal Television from 1991 to 1996, where she served as a business news correspondent and anchor for programs such as The Wall Street Journal Report, World Market Outlook, and Business USA.
NBC/CNBC and Fox News
In 1996, MacCallum joined WBIS-TV, a short-lived sports and business station in New York City, as a host and reporter. She subsequently became a reporter/anchor for NBC/CNBC, frequently appearing on News with Brian Williams, Today, NBC Nightly News, and CNBC World before hosting CNBC's Morning Call with Martha MacCallum and Ted David. She also hosted the evening show Checkpoint, focusing on national security and the War on Terror.
MacCallum joined Fox News in 2004. She hosted The Live Desk from 2006 to 2010 and America's Newsroom from 2010 to 2017. In January 2017, she launched a new program, The First 100 Days, which premiered as a placeholder for Tucker Carlson Tonight following Megyn Kelly's departure. On April 28, 2017, the show was renamed The Story with Martha MacCallum.
Recent Developments
In late 2020, upstart network Newsmax experienced a surge in ratings, leading to a decline in MacCallum's and Fox's ratings. On January 11, 2021, she was demoted when her show, The Story, was moved from the 7 PM ET timeslot to the 3 PM ET timeslot. Despite the demotion, MacCallum continues to host The Story while also serving as a substitute anchor for programs such as America's Newsroom, Faulkner Focus, Outnumbered, and The Five.
Controversies and Awards
Following the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021, MacCallum initially stated, "This is a huge victory for these protesters. They have torn down the system!" Later, she called the events "disturbing" and stated that "control must be sustained." She drew comparisons between the Capitol Riot and a peaceful protest outside Josh Hawley's house days earlier, a comparison that The New York Times described as "bizarre." MacCallum has been awarded two Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media and the Soldiersocks Commitment to Service Award. She has also faced criticism for using the term "China virus" to refer to COVID-19.
Personal Life
Martha MacCallum is married to Dan Gregory, whom she wed on August 22, 1992, at St. Elizabeth's Church in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Together, they have three children: two sons and a daughter.
