Katalin Szili: A Hungarian Politician
Early Life and EducationKatalin Szili graduated from the University of Pécs (now named University of Pécs) with a degree in human ecology and political science.
Political Career
1994-2014: A LegislatorSzili began her political career in 1994, serving as a member of the Hungarian National Assembly. From 1994 to 1998, she held the position of Political Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water Management. She later became Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly from 1998 to 2002.
2002-2005: Presidential Candidate
In 2005, Szili ran for President of Hungary as the candidate of the Hungarian Socialist Party. However, she lost the election to opposition candidate László Sólyom.
2009: Speaker of the Parliament
Szili was elected Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament in 2009. She resigned from this position later that year to run for Mayor of Pécs, but lost to Zsolt Páva.
2010-2014: Independent Deputy
After the 2010 local elections, Szili founded the Social Union (SZU) and became its first President. She left the Hungarian Socialist Party and its parliamentary group, continuing her parliamentary work as an independent deputy.
2013: Coalition and Loss of Parliamentary Seat
In 2013, Szili's Social Union formed a coalition with 11 other parties and civic groups to create the Civilized Social Party (KTI). Her new party failed to pass the 5% electoral threshold, resulting in her losing her parliamentary seat after holding it for 20 years.
