Biography of Katarina Chibbini
Katarina Chibbini was an Austrian pianist and composer. She was born and raised in Austria, and she began her musical education under the guidance of her father, Leopold Kozeluh. She later studied with renowned pianist Muzio Clementi.
Early Career
In 1805, Chibbini made her debut in a public concert. Her talent as a composer was recognized, and several of her compositions were published in Vienna and Prague. She gained recognition for her light dance music, which was often performed in imperial courts.
Marriage and Court Appointment
In 1809, Chibbini married Anton Chibbini, a lawyer who had close ties to the imperial court. Shortly after their marriage, she was appointed as a chambermaid to Empress Caroline Augusta, the wife of Emperor Franz. This prestigious appointment led to the end of her concert career, although she continued to compose and publish music for court performances.
Influence and Relationships
Chibbini held significant influence at the imperial court. Robert Schumann, in a letter to his family, referred to her as "all-powerful." However, it is believed that while she was kind to the young couple, Schumann and his beloved student Clara Wieck, she did not intervene in their marriage dispute with Clara's father.
Famous composers such as Frederic Chopin and Ignaz Moscheles had interactions with Chibbini. Moscheles even dedicated his Sonata for Piano Four Hands to her. Chibbini was known to appreciate Beethoven's music, unlike her father. There is a documented conversation between Beethoven and Chibbini in 1822, where Chibbini remarked that Beethoven was perhaps the only composer who had not written a single weak or trivial composition. Beethoven responded by saying he would have destroyed many of his works if he could.
Involvement in the Austrian Revolution
During the revolutionary upheavals in Austria in 1848, Chibbini was believed to be part of influential circles within the court party. She is mentioned in revolutionary pamphlets as Xantippe Cibirinni.
