Katarine Zalyan-Manukyan: Nurse, Politician, and Humanitarian
Early Life and FamilyKatarine Zalyan was born in Yerevan, the daughter of a medical doctor and a homemaker. She became a nurse and worked in orphanages for underprivileged children. In 1917, she married Aram Manukyan, whom she met while working at an orphanage. Together, they welcomed a daughter, Seda, in 1918. However, tragedy struck when Aram Manukyan passed away from typhoid fever in 1919, just four months after Seda's birth.
Political Activism
As a member of the Dashnaktsutyun party, Zalyan-Manukyan was elected as one of the first three women members of the Parliament of the Republic of Armenia in 1919. She served on the Health Committee and dedicated herself to assisting orphans and refugees during a widespread epidemic.
Exile and Return
After Armenia fell under Bolshevik control in 1920, Zalyan-Manukyan faced political persecution and was forced to flee to Krasnodar, where her husband's relatives resided. However, she returned to Armenia in 1927 due to the urgent need for medical professionals. She continued to work tirelessly until 1937.
Later Years and Legacy
After retiring from her medical practice, Zalyan-Manukyan relocated to Moscow, where she passed away in 1965. She is remembered as a compassionate and dedicated nurse, politician, and humanitarian who dedicated her life to serving the people of Armenia during a turbulent time in its history.
